I don’t know about you but I check the occasional iMessage or Whatsapp whilst I’m in the car. I’m smart enough not to do it whilst rounding Hospital Bend though, and instead keep my life-altering Valencia or X-Pro II decisions for when I’m stuck in barely moving bumper to bumper traffic…
And, sure, the rules about using your phone when driving are pretty strict, but how exactly are they going to deal with people using their watches?
A man in Canada (OK, bear in mind this happened in Canada) was fined $120 for driving whilst wearing his Apple Watch. A cop saw him using the device to change the song on the radio. But…
A law in Quebec’s highway safety code prohibits driving a car while using a handheld device that has a telephone function.
Jeffrey Macesin, the man who was fined, has argued that “the Apple Watch shouldn’t be treated the same as a smartphone” because it is a watch. In an interview with CTV, he made his point: “It’s not so much handheld. It’s a watch. You know, it’s on my wrist. That’s where it gets controversial.”
I couldn’t agree more.
I have even imagined scenarios where I am pulled over for holding my iPhone and have had to make up brilliant excuses.
Anyway, I don’t know how the SAPS are going to deal with people using their Apple Watches whilst driving. As for the public, if we just take on the invincible attitude of all the minibus taxi drivers we should, technically, get away with anything.
