FIFA’s popularity is at its lowest point in recent history, which is really saying something considering how unpopular world football’s governing body has been over the past two decades. This, however, is some next-level stuff.
A Swiss police spokesperson has confirmed that they received a bomb threat targeting the FIFA elective congress in Zurich, where today Sepp Blatter stands to almost certainly retain his position as the organisation’s president. Here’s Sport24:
…the Hallenstadion hall and the media tribune there were evacuated once the congress broke up for lunch at noon, likely for a thorough search.
The reports have also been confirmed by those in attendance with this from TimesLive:
Local journalists reported that they were forced to leave their places in Fifa Congress hall.
The congress had earlier seen a disruption of a different kind as supporters of Palestine’s notion to have Israel suspended by FIFA chanted slogans and waved flags before being removed by security.
Dark days for FIFA indeed, and as details of the widespread corruption continue to emerge it is set to get worse before it gets better.
