Let’s just cut to the chase here: The New York Times has reported a 7% drop in the sales of thongs, and a 17% increase in the sale of “full-bottomed underwear”. Yes, those granny panties you have mocked your mother and granny for wearing for years are making a big comeback.
Could it be the increase in plus-size models? Or are women starting to dress and shop for themselves?
Women, no matter their shape or size, should wear whatever underwear they like – be it thong, brief or otherwise, as long as they feel comfortable in it.
There’s even the Lonely Girl Project – an Instagram account that encourages “women to post photos of themselves in their natural habitat, in lingerie they feel good wearing”.
Will the men in our lives ever accept it? I had a friend of mine who bought the most gorgeous bikini the other day, and it is full bottomed and high waisted. Her boyfriend’s response?
Boys, best you start accepting that us girls kinda want to be comfy. How about we compromise and promise to still wear the lacy stuff at home?
Kerry O’Brien, the founder and designer at Commando, a brand which makes seamless, comfortable underwear explains a good point:
When I’m designing new styles, I never think ‘Will a man find this sexy? I think about what women want to wear and I create styles that will gently hug her body and make her feel fabulous. No matter what style she prefers, women should love their underwear and their underwear should love them back.
Thongs have a time and a place, and I see nothing wrong with wearing comfy (comfy does not mean it is five years old and moth-eaten) knickers. They can still look pretty and have lots of lace.
