Oh, the passenger aviation industry in this country. Goodness me but doesn’t it just make you want to double over and laugh? Or cry. I’m not sure which one. It physically hurts me to book a flight on SAA and each time I do I declare myself a little bit closer to bankruptcy. And then we’ve got all the “low-cost” airlines which have taken it upon themselves to redefine the term “low-cost” to mean “so long as it’s R1 cheaper than SAA we’re all good”. Not to mention the low-costs flights never present the opportunity for a quick upgrade. Or a free drink. Heaven forbid you need some water.
It will come as no surprise then that there is a new airline as of today. South Africa is getting pretty good at launching those… Anyway, Fly Go Air they’re calling themselves. The maiden voyage will be on June 29th, from Cape Town to Joburg. And what’s going to make them different from the rest?
They will be offering passengers the option of ordering cocktails.
You will all know from experience that SAA makes you mix your own Bloody Mary (not cool) so this will be a nice change. Don’t be fooled into thinking that Fly Go Air is competing with FlySAFair and Kulula, though. No, no, they’re going full tilt and the airline will be “positioning itself as a premium carrier – which means that meals, drinks and checked luggage are all included in the airfare – aimed at business travellers”.
Hmmm, does this mean we’re sticking with SAA?
The airline will initially be using 50-seater Bombardier CRJ jets which they will lease from Cemair.
Joyful times for air travel in our country, I tell you. Here’s hoping they don’t vanish like 1Time and Santaco (remember that taxi airline?!)…
