South Africa became well acquainted with June Steenkamp during the months of the media circus that was the Oscar Pistorius trial, with her unwavering glare often directed the way of her daughter’s killer.
We know, understandably, that she is no big fan of the former athlete and amidst news that Pistorius could be released as soon as August, Steenkamp had some stern words. IOL reports:
I don’t think it is long enough for somebody who has caused somebody’s death…
Surely her life is worth more than 10 months’ incarceration? He’s taken something so precious out of our lives. Her life is gone…
All I could think about was her in that toilet and that she couldn’t move. She couldn’t get out of the way. She was trapped in there. She was suffering. She was in pain and agony. Her brains all over… I’ve had nightmares over that.
Pistorius is in line for early release due to his good conduct, which must mean the guards are fond of football and jewellery.
It does seem absurd that after firing a rally of bullets through a toilet door into an enclosed space, Oscar may serve just 10 months in prison. I guess five years in the slammer doesn’t quite mean what it used to.
