We know that North Korean leader Kim Jong-Un suffers from a serious bout of small man syndrome, but his latest public execution is a real playground display of ‘my gun is bigger than yours’.
A South Korean spy agency has reported in parliament that Kim executed his Defence Minister Hyon Yong-chol by some rather unusual means. The BBC reports:
MPs were told Mr Hyon was killed on 30 April by anti-aircraft fire in front of an audience of hundreds, the Yonhap news agency reports.
It said Mr Hyon had fallen asleep during an event attended by Kim Jong-un and had not carried out instructions.
The news comes weeks after the reported execution of 15 senior officials.
Seems like the little man is on a roll. Those in the know report that Kim and Mr Hyon (far right above) had been incredibly close, with the executed man having served on the committee for the late Kim Jong-il’s funeral back in 2011. Many have pointed to this latest show of force as a sign that the leader is taking strain:
Mike Madden of North Korea Leadership Watch told the BBC that if true, the execution was “entirely a demonstration of power and authority”.
“This is indicative of Kim Jong-un’s impulsive decision-making”, he said, and a sign of a leader who is “not feeling secure”.
Maybe he should stick to playing golf or flying planes, those are two things he makes look really easy.
