Us Capetonians love to hibernate in winter. We moan and complain about the weather because unless we are dressed in underwater-advernturer scuba suits, climbing Lion’s Head and promenade strolls become a thing of distant memory. Of course there are those magical days when the sun peaks through and we all scramble outside for a bit of Vitamin D.
If you want to do something a bit different on one of these sunny days, why not head a couple of minutes out of town for a day of cheese, charcuterie, nature, and, obviously, wine.
It’s on the banks of the Theewaterskloof Dam, three kilometres outside Villiersdorp. They have put together a rather grand sounding day for you and a couple of friends (or you can make a romantic day of it, your choice!).
Full Day Tour from 10:00 till 15:30
10:00 – 11:00: Freshly ground coffee with breakfast, including a fresh croissant with butter, fruit preserve and cheese.
11:00 – 12:00: Interactive smokehouse tour and demonstration of the traditional techniques and processes.
12:00 – 13:00: Beer and cured meat tasting. Four handcrafted, locally produced beers paired with four distinctive flavoured cured meats.
13:00 – 14:00: Lunch. Something delightful from the smokehouse and seasonal salads and vegetables from our garden. 100% natural and organic.
14:00 – 15:00: Cheese and wine pairing. Two white wines, Sauvignon Blanc and Pinot Grigio, and two reds, Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon from the local Stettyn cellar, are paired with some fabulous and awarding winning South African cheeses.
15:00 – 15:30: Take a walk in the organic vegetable garden and permaculture system. Sean will give a talk about permaculture and its environmental benefits. At the end of a festive eating day everyone will leave with a goodie bag of foods to enjoy and wine.
Doesn’t that sound like a lovely getaway? As I said, book the day with your winter-lover or take the whole family:
R799 for Full Day Food Tasting for Two People (R1 598 value)
R1 450 for Full Day Food Tasting for Four People (R3 196 value)
R2 099 for Full Day Food Tasting for Six People (R4 794 value)
The owners have been in the catering industry for the last 20 years so you’re definitely in for a treat – also, cheese and wine? I do believe no Capetonian could ever refuse that.
