Tim Noakes is no stranger to a side dish of controversy, including the charges against him just two weeks back by the Association for Dietetics in SA.
Now it seems he is back under the media spotlight for an editorial he, along with two other doctors, wrote putting forward the view that eating carbohydrates, especially those pesky refined ones, is to blame for the prevalence of obesity rather than lack of exercise. This from TimesLive:
The editorial was published in the British Journal of Sports Medicine in which one of his best friends, Karim Khan, a fellow Banter, is one of the three editors.
The editorial argued no one could outrun a bad diet despite the food industry’s arguments that one could indulge in junk food if you burnt off the excess calories by exercise.
Now the piece spread rapidly and was shared by some rather large media outlets, although it has since been taken offline, with the site saying ‘the paper has been temporarily removed following an expression of concern’.
That expression of concern centres on the fact that Noakes did not disclose his conflict of interest – his best-selling ‘Real Meal Revolution’ – which is the accepted common practice in medical research.
The book, by the way, has sold over 150 000 copies which is enough to eat like a king – provided that king doesn’t eat carbs.
