We’ve all been following IS news for months and months now. We’ve heard the horror stories and seen images. But do any of us actually grasp the level of devastation the citizens of Syria are dealing with?
Cameraman Gabriel Chaim managed to get a drone into the air in the town of Kobani, on the Syria/Turkey border.
Kobani, also known as Ayn al-Arab, saw months of coalition airstrikes and IS bombings in 2014, after which IS took control.
It is 70 percent destroyed. The problem is that we do not have enough machinery to remove the debris or materials with which to rebuild. The cost will be billions.
With the help of US-led airstrikes and resistance fighters, Syrian Kurds were able to take back control of the town. Hundreds lay dead and rotting in the streets, but “Kurds insist on giving dead ISIS fighters a proper burial wherever possible”.
There are now an estimated 60 000 back in the ruined city, with a bakery, two schools and a private hospital up and running.
