Yes, I can almost hear Floyd ‘Money’ Mayweather recoiling in horror as he reads these attacks on his personality. No, sorry, that was just the noise he made when the $180 million was transferred into his account.
What was clear following Sunday morning’s fight, other than the fact that calling it ‘the fight of the century’ may have been somewhat premature, was that people had finally cottoned on to what a horrid history Mayweather brings into the ring with him.
Sure, Manny Pacquiao is no saint himself (he holds some rather antiquated views on contraception and same-sex marriage to put it nicely), but Floyd’s 48-0 record may as well refer to the history of domestic violence and abuse charges he has managed to dodge. The Daily Beast touches on those charges here:
Floyd Mayweather’s history of misogyny, expressed—as he is wont to do—through violence, is well documented and reprehensible…It extends over a dozen years and includes at least seven separate physical assaults on five different women that resulted in arrest or citation, as well as several other instances where the police had to be summoned in response to an actual or perceived threat from Mayweather.
Floyd made mention at the press conference before the fight of the fact that he doesn’t see three of his children as often as he would like, quipping that ‘we all know what women are like’. Well, why might the mother of your children be somewhat apprehensive about you spending time with them?
…he showed up at 4 a.m. at the home of the mother of his children, Josie Harris, and dragged her by the hair while she shrieked in terror. He proceeded to beat the daylights out of her, dragooned his bodyguard into restraining the kids and becoming an accomplice after the fact and told his then 9-year-old son, “You call 911 or run out of the house, and I’ll ‘beat you.’”
It appears raising these issues with the fighter and his entourage is something of a no-no, as two journalists found out when they had their credentials revoked and were unable to cover the fight. These things are best swept under the rug, especially with Mayweather to cash in on one more big pay day of course.
Bottom line? Perhaps boxing was the real loser, as I can’t imagine Mayweather cares one iota about public opinion and the sport’s lackadaisical approach to violence has once again been brought to the fore.
Oh, and those fans who woke up at the crack of dawn on Sunday expecting anything other than a jab fest, of course.
