Wow Jozi, I get that life in the Big Smoke can be stressful but numbers like these below really aren’t on.
This past Saturday saw the Johannesburg metro police out in full force across the city, and their resources were pushed to the limit dealing with the sheer number of people driving whilst over the limit. Just how many? 438 drunken drivers in ONE night. This from News24:
Soweto had the highest number of drunken drivers with the figures coming in at 39, said Chief Superintendent Wayne Minnaar.
Midrand was second with 25 arrests followed by the Johannesburg CBD with 18.
In Roodepoort, 14 people were arrested while two others were held in Rosettenville, 12 on the M2 highway, 10 in Sandton and 18 in Eastgate.
It will be a rather unpleasant week for those drivers then, who were released on bail of between R1 000 and R1 500 and must appear in court this week to face charges.
Really guys, this is 2015 and we can’t play dumb any more. Sure our parents’ generation may have had a few and climbed behind the wheel but they were crazy baby boomers who had to put up with us back at home.
We know drinking and driving isn’t a viable option in this day and age, so stop playing with your own and others’ safety. If you don’t have a sober tjommie along for the night then get on board with Uber – convenient, affordable and sure to save you from a world of trouble.
