If Jurassic Park has taught us anything it’s that you shouldn’t trust rich business moguls with dinosaur eggs. Oh, and it’s possible to recreate an entire species through poking a needle into a prehistoric mosquito. It’s science guys, look it up.
Now construction workers in the Chinese province of Guandong got more than they bargained for when some routine work took a turn towards the unexpected. The Verge reports:
…workers stumbled upon 43 fossilized (sic) dinosaur eggs in the red sandstone beneath the roads they were repairing. Some measured up to 5 inches across, and 19 of them were fully intact…
While it’s too early to tell what species the eggs belong to, other eggs found in the area date between 65 and 89 million years old.
Now it turns out the province is making something of a name for itself, so much so that it has been dubbed ‘Home of the Dinosaurs’. In 2004 the local museum was awarded the Guinness World Record for the largest collection of fossilised dinosaur eggs, with the number of eggs found in the area totalling around 17 000.
In addition to the eggs palaeontologists have discovered 11 fossilised skeletons and around 200 footprint fossils. In short, if anyone does want to recreate The Land Before Time this might be the province to do it in.
