You know it’s not going to be a good week for you when you wake up and Ricky Gervais has tweeted about you and your giraffe that you shot five years ago.
That’s what has happened to Rebecca Francis, a self proclaimed “Big Buck Hunter” from the US.
Gervais, a massive animal welfare crusader (also named PETA’s Person Of The Year in 2013) who firmly states that “Animals don’t have a voice. But I do. A loud one. I’m a f***king big mouth. My voice is for them. And I’ll never shut up while they suffer” found the image from 2010 and posted it, and it’s now gone viral. It’s been out in the twittersphere for three days now, and Francis has received numerous messages, none of them very nice and some even containing death threats.
Francis has come back with this reply, via Hunting Life’s Facebook page:
She has also spoken to The Huffington Post, saying that “Ricky Gervais used his power and influence to set off a firestorm against women in the hunting industry” and that “the issue has has gone from a discussion about the legal act of hunting to the illegal and immoral acts of death threats against me and my family”.
Ricky ended his giraffe themed tweets with this:
I’m 100% in support of Ricky on this one. Surely the “smiling photo next to dying giraffe that I just killed” photo is unnecessary? You’re hardly going to have it printed onto canvas and put it up in one of your children’s bedrooms so that’s their last vision of you at night, are you?
Wouldn’t you rather they see these?
