In case you missed our story this morning you should pop over HERE first and listen to the speech that has landed Zulu King Goodwill Zwelithini in hot water. Not as much hot water as the innocent foreigners being murdered on our streets, mind you, but things are set to get worse for the Zulu leader.
Tim Flack, a spokesperson for the SA Defence Force Union, has decided to take action and laid a charge of hate speech against Goodwill at the SA Human Rights Commission. TimesLive reports:
Flack laid the charges in his personal capacity with the support of the union. He said that political leaders have done little to stop the violence and people complaining about Xenophobia on social media were ineffective.
Flack said: “Twitter activists are playing hairdryer politics. I decided to do something. The king needs to account and be charged for inciting this violence.”
A quick recap of Zwelithini’s strongest words then – he called foreigners ‘lice’, said we should ‘take out the ants and leave them in the sun’ and finished by saying ‘immigrants must take their bags and go where they come from’. What a charming dinner guest he would make.
Whilst the constitution protects the right to free speech it does not allow for hate speech, defined as such by TimesLive:
…propaganda for war; incitement of imminent violence; or advocacy of hatred that is based on race‚ ethnicity‚ gender or religion‚ and that constitutes incitement to cause harm.
Yeah, whilst his speech is obviously not solely to blame for the horrible scenes playing out across the country he should shoulder some serious blame. Like Spiderman says in every awful remake we are subjected to, ‘with great power comes great responsibility’.
