If you were paying attention to the news yesterday you may have seen some of the EFF’s land-grabbing efforts in the Ballito area. That’s Ballito, as in the much sought-after seaside town in KZN where matric students go to celebrate the end of high school and slightly older, creepier people go to join in.
As more details of yesterday’s events emerge it is becoming clearer that the EFF may have had ulterior motives at heart. Here’s News24:
EFF members were passing out membership forms which people filled in, and were then led to onto the land to secure a plot for themselves…
When quizzed about the membership forms, [EFF leader Lindani] Mthembu said: “The people have realised that the EFF is a party that will act for them. They have realised that we are doing this for the community because they were living like pigs”.
Whilst the occupation was largely without violence one woman, reportedly wearing EFF regalia, was killed when a car struck her whilst she was crossing the N2. Two others were injured.
The EFF have refused to slow down, despite police and law enforcement destroying shacks and (in some cases in Khayelitsha) using tear gas and rubber bullets to disperse crowds. Jackie Shandu, speaking on behalf of the EFF, had the following to say during a press conference in Durban:
“How long are they going to destroy them? There is a bigger political issue of black people being denied their land.”
He said that every time the police destroyed a structure, the EFF would rebuild them at night or identify a nearby piece of land where they would build anew.
“The issue of land must be resolved.”
This follows last week’s comments that the EFF will lead land-grabs in areas like Bishopscourt, Camps Bay and Rondebosch. It seems this story has only just begun.
