Gandhi: an advocate for freedom, expander of women’s rights, the man who led India to independence from Britain and who helped the Indian community in South Africa. One can really only describe him as a genuinely good person, so why this lone soul in Joburg thought it necessary to throw paint on his statue is beyond me…

This all went down on Saturday in Gandhi Square in central Johannesburg. Thankfully a police car drove past at just the right time, preventing the man from doing any more damage. He had already managed to get a fair amount of white paint onto Gandhi and apparently also had boards with ‘Gandhi statue must go’ written on them.

The 21-year old was arrested and will appear in court for malicious damage today.
