Shock, horror, more statue-related news coming your way.
Sunday saw the Paul Kruger statue in Pretoria defaced with green paint and hikers in Cape Town found a strange mini-JZ statue atop Lion’s Head.
Now the statue battle rages on in Pretoria as Afrikaans protesters are set to defend the Kruger statue which sits in Church Square. Leading the charge is singer Sunette Bridges, who plans to chain herself to the statue in response to the ANC Youth League calling for its removal. The Front National party has backed Bridges, with this from City Press:
“This act of defiance is a call for unity of all like-minded individuals and groups to resist any further acts of vandalism or intention of removal of national heritage sites and symbols,” Front National said today.
“Front National will be there to chain ourselves to the statue as well and we call on all our supporters to be at Church Square at 8.30am on Wednesday.”
More protests are also planned at the Jan van Riebeeck statue in Cape Town and another Paul Kruger statue in Rustenburg.
More good news – Steve Hofmeyr will join in the protests at Church Square. Come now, you didn’t think he would miss this opportunity did you?
I’m sure there will be fireworks and, with the Hof in attendance, a host of racially charged tweets.
