Looks like some people had a pretty hectique Easter weekend, and by ‘some people’ I mean this kid’s parents, and only because she was on her way to join ISIS.
On Sunday, a 15-year-old school girl from Kenwyn, Cape Town, was taken off a British Airways flight from Cape Town to Joburg when authorities suspected she was “going on to board an international flight to join the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (IS)”.
Our Minister of State Security, David Mahlobo, has confirmed that was indeed her intention.
We can confirm that she was leaving the country with the intention of joining IS, and she had been actively engaged with social media networks. Her parents have also confirmed she was using Twitter.
Her grandparents noticed she was missing earlier that day when she had not come out of her room for breakfast. They then broke down her locked bedroom door and realised she had climbed out her window.
Police and the Minister of State Security were alerted and she was found nine hours later on the plane.
Evidence found in her bedroom suggested that she had transferred money to an unknown source, and other clues written on her school books suggested to her family that she had been in contact with IS recruiters.
Speaking to a neighbour of the family, the girl’s friend said that she had spoken about joining IS.
The teenager is now back with her family.
Mahlobo has said an “investigation is underway as to how far this network goes, whether there is a cell in the country, and what the methods of recruiting and funding are. We cannot allow South Africa to be used as a recruitment space”.
IS uses Facebook, Twitter and Instagram to recruit “young female teenagers from around the world to join their ranks in Syria and Iraq” and they are managing to garner a huge amount of attention from youngsters.
