It’s been a busy last week for Trevor Noah. First he was announced as the new host of ‘The Daily Show’, then his Twitter history was pulled apart tweet by tweet. This forced him to address those attacking his ‘misogynistic, anti-Semitic’ Twitter history through a, well, tweet. Then he laughed all the way to the bank.
Now T-No has found some local support from the South African Jewish Board of Deputies. Mary Kluk, chairwoman of the Jewish Board of Deputies, released this statement, reported here in TimesLive:
Negative stereotypes of all people are potentially offensive. However, the SAJBD believes that tweets made by Noah do not constitute anti-Jewish prejudice on his part. Trevor Noah’s style of humour is playful, and is intended to provoke a response.
The SAJBD wishes him all the success and wisdom that he will require in his new position, and is confident that he will do our country proud.
Noah also found vocal support from fellow South African comedians like Kagiso Lediga and Marc Lottering. Lottering had this to say:
It’s the way things go in the jungle when you’re about to hit the big time … every comic in the world has made gags somewhere along the line that are questionable. The heat is on, and I hope that Trevor stays in the kitchen and cooks up a storm.
It seems all of us back home have your back Trevor. Now go teach those ‘Mericans a thing or two about what real comedy is.
