We all know the buzz that came with Trevor Noah being announced as the new host of ‘The Daily Show’, but as you can imagine in America there were plenty of people frantically googling our most famous comedic export’s name. Well, that and where the hell South Africa was on a world map.
Now competition for the coveted spot had been fierce and Noah’s name had been mentioned, although not as one of the frontrunners. This from The Daily Beast:
The rumored candidates for the plum job included Daily Show regulars Samantha Bee, her husband Jason Jones, and…popular comics Amy Poehler and Louis CK as well as Comedy Central personality Amy Schumer.
So what helped our Trevor get the nod ahead of such comic luminaries as Louis CK? Well Comedy Central president Michele Ganeless certainly seems to be a big fan and has been gushing over Noah since the announcement was made:
It has been a great joy to spend time with him, he is truly an extraordinary guy. You can hear his brain working as he’s talking. What’s also remarkable about him is he thinks on his feet. He’s a true student of the human condition; he’s a citizen of the world; his comedy is very layered, and he’s a very quick study.
He’s done standup all over the world, and he doesn’t sit in his hotel room when he goes to a new city. He gets out and watches people, and then puts them in as part of his act that night.
It certainly will have counted in Trevor’s favour that he seems to enjoy a great rapport with outgoing host Jon Stewart, who personally invited him to join the show as a contributor over a year ago.
Now the countdown begins until Stewart hangs up his boots and Noah gets to take the hot seat. Here’s hoping he nails it, America loves him and he returns triumphant to become president. We already have a joker in the hotseat so it’s not such a stretch…
Of course with comedy, like most things in life, you can’t please all the people all the time. Some Twitter users have gone to town on Noah for old tweets of his (READ THAT HERE) and it looks like there might be a storm brewing.
