Those familiar with Mad Men, the show that gives us a peak into 1960’s advertising agencies, will know that lead man Don Draper likes his tipple. He knocks back the whiskey, chain-smokes and enjoys the odd extra-marital affair, which may be what makes him so popular with men going through mid-life crises.
Now, in what is a classic case of life imitating art, the man responsible for bringing the lead character to life, Jon Hamm, has just finished a 30-day stint in a rehab facility for alcohol abuse. This from TMZ:
Hamm checked himself into Silver Hill Hospital in New Canaan, Connecticut at the end of February. It’s a high-end facility…
Hamm’s people tell TMZ, “With the support of his longtime partner Jennifer Westfeldt, Jon Hamm recently completed treatment for his struggle with alcohol addiction. They have asked for privacy and sensitivity going forward”.
I suppose this raises the interesting question of whether his drinking problems existed prior to the filming of the series or whether playing Don led Hamm to hit the bottle. We know in the past certain actors have taken their method-acting pretty seriously (think Heath Ledger as the Joker) so perhaps Hamm took a bit of Draper home with him.
For those heartless fans out there fear not, filming on the seventh and final season of Mad Men has already been completed and is set to air according to schedule.
