This is probably the saddest human on the planet and there’s no wonder why he was eating alone on Valentine’s Day.
28-year old Christopher Baker was eating a buffet dinner for one at Borneo Bistro in Sunderland. The price of the buffet? £7.25. Baker didn’t want to pay for his meal, and from what he does it is quite clear he never had any intention of paying.
Baker merrily sat and ate his meal and sipped on a bottle of water and, as soon as the table next to him stood up and left, he popped the pet rat on the restaurant floor. He then put on a horrified look and shouted –
It’s a rat. I’m not eating here, I want my money back.
According to Kevin Smith, the owner of the restaurant, Baker then claimed that whilst he had been eating, the rat had also bitten his finger. The restaurant quickly refunded the money to the patron, and Smith picked up the rat as it appeared to be tame. On calling pest control it was confirmed the rat was a tame pet.
On viewing the CCTV cameras it is quite clear that Baker pulled the rat from his bag or pocket.
Baker was later arrested and told police that he had bought the rat from a pet shop as a gift for his daughter, before placing it in his pocket and heading to the restaurant.
Sadly Mr Baker had been drinking all day and the rat had been intended for his daughter as a gift. He had to pay the £7.25 plus an additional £60 victim surcharge. He was also sentenced to do 12 months community order with supervision.
