This is pretty tough to write so excuse me if it is devoid of humour.
South Africa were pipped at the post by a brilliant New Zealand run chase but we really must ask questions of our bowling and fielding near the end. South Africa missed more run-outs than I care to count and bowled loose deliveries every time they managed to tie the Kiwis down and exert some pressure.
There will be much analysis in the days that follow but I for one don’t believe it was a Grade A choke like some of of our previous World Cup exits. That being said the chances were there at the end and it was as much down to our inability to grasp them as it was to New Zealand’s calm heads under pressure.
Whoever was responsible for making the call to play Vern Philander ahead of Kyle Abbott deserves a stern talking-to and Dale Steyn, as much as we all love the great man, had what can be politely described as a stinker.
Now we can only hope the Indians give the Aussies a thorough hiding so we don’t have to listen to Warner and the rest of those thugs whooping with delight.
Also, that rain didn’t really do us much good but sometimes you have to take it on the chin and we only have ourselves to blame. Now excuse me whilst I go and sob in the corner.
