FEEL IT, IT IS HERE! Yes rugby lovers, all of your wet dreams have come true: Cape Town Stadium will play host to the South African leg of the World Sevens Series circuit. To all the good folk up in Port Elizabeth all we can say is unlucky guys, you’ve done well but it’s time to step it up a notch.
EWN broke the news this morning and reported as follows:
The South African Rugby Union has opted not to renew the current Port Elizabeth contract, moving the event to the Mother City from December this year.
The Eastern Cape city hosted the tournament from 2011 until last year.
Nelson Mandela Bay municipality and the City of Cape Town were the only two cities vying to host the popular rugby tournament.
The City of Cape Town and the South African Rugby Union will officially make the announcement on Friday.
Despite the setback EP Rugby president Cheeky Watson remained upbeat, citing the fact that the Southern Kings Super Rugby franchise is looking forward to five years in the competition as well as the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium playing host to more test matches in the coming years.
All good PE, now let us Capetonians start dusting off our ninja turtle and morph suit costumes and get ready to boogie hard. We have a reputation to maintain.
