Fans of real-life murder mysteries are having a field day with the story of real estate tycoon Robert Durst, the man arrested Saturday in connection with a murder that took place in 2000. Durst is also the man upon whom the HBO documentary mega-hit The Jinx is based, which brought his story into the homes of millions of viewers across the US over the past six weeks.
Now more details have come to light regarding Saturday’s arrest, and it just keeps getting stranger. This from Gawker:
…Robert Durst was reportedly in possession of a latex mask designed to conceal his identity when he was arrested last weekend…
…police found the mask in the real estate heir’s hotel room along with $42,000 in cash, a loaded handgun and a small amount of marijuana.
The mask fits over Durst’s face and neck. The 71-year-old also had a fake Texas ID with the name Everette Ward—the same name he’d registered under in the hotel.
Now $42 000 sounds like a fair chunk of change but the money, found stuffed inside several envelopes and all in $100 bills, is only a small part of the $315 000 Durst had taken from various accounts over the previous month or so.
Details of the investigation have remained somewhat scarce as authorities keep their cards close to their chests. In the meantime we stare on wide-eyed, this really is one of those stories that keeps on giving.
