In the midst of all the name-calling, chanting and mass brawls that have enveloped South Africa’s political landscape the last few weeks some of us may have forgotten that Julius Malema has something of an ongoing battle with SARS.
In the latest twist to the saga SARS have applied for a final sequestration order against Juju, which makes it plain for all to see that whatever agreement they had previously come to is no longer in place. This from TimesLive:
The final sequestration would mean that Malema couldn’t lead the EFF in parliament…
Malema has stated that he was abiding by the conditions of a compromise agreement made last May that gave him time to settle the R18m he owed in taxes and interest.
Malema’s lawyer is now saying it is a political move in order to unsettle the EFF party leader, also claiming Malema had paid all outstanding debts in November of last year.
His team of lawyers are set to file an affidavit opposing the application.
All legal wranglings aside how much money must Malema be making in order to owe (or have owed, depending on who you believe) back taxes and interest of R18 million? That is some serious change my friend, maybe this political gig is worth looking into after all.
