Ah, yes, Australia and her strict road rules. So strict, in fact, that even a Hollywood superstar and Californian politician couldn’t get around them. And, no, it wasn’t a high speed car chase, but rather the issue of Arnold Schwarzenegger riding around in Melbourne on one of the city’s blue share bikes, without a helmet. (Arnie, take it from us, ditch the bicycle and rather get a Vespa. It looks way cooler! )
Just FYI, in the state of Victoria, Australia, it’s compulsory to wear a helmet and “failure to do so can result in a $146 fine”.
Luckily, Arnold was met with the kindest of policemen, Senior Constable Robert Gillson. Gilson chatted with Arnold and decided not to fine him and rather chose to direct him “to the nearest 7-Eleven to buy a helmet for $5”.
The constable said he often chose to educate tourists from countries without helmet laws rather than fine them.
It seems that in Cali and the UK (especially London’s bike sharing program), it is not compulsory to wear a helmet when on a bicycle. Even Boris Johnson made the mistake in Melbourne.
