At first it was all about defending #TeamElton, but of course there were always going to be #TeamD&G supporters. There are quite a few, actually, and they include the Catholic Church (obviously) and Italy’s far-right politicians.
The history of Gabanna’s opinion goes as far back as 2006, when he was quoted by Corriere Della Sera as saying:
I am opposed to the idea of a child growing up with two gay parents. A child needs a mother and a father. I could not imagine my childhood without my mother. I also believe that it is cruel to take a baby away from its mother.
Fast forward nine years, and Italy’s conservative politicians are in agreement.
“I’m with Dolce and Gabbana,” said Roberto Formigoni, a senator from the New Center Right political party. “I applaud their courageous statement. This is freedom of speech.” He then went on to call Elton John a terrorist: “The campaign launched by Elton John is shameful and intolerable. Elton John is a Taliban, using the same tactics used by the Taliban against Charlie Hebdo.”
Even the former prime minister, Sivlio Berlusconi, has gotten involved, favouring D&G’s opinion (he also once said that it’s “better to love pretty girls than to be gay”, though, so I don’t know how much I like him).
Look, neither party is right or wrong. I think Mr Gabbana needs to think of heterosexual couples who cannot have a child because of an inhospitable womb or slow swimmers, who would 100% be an IVF baby’s parents. And Elton should maybe have a nice cup of tea with them and talk it over instead of reverting to nasty words on the internet.
It’s an interesting debate. After all…
