Last Friday brought news of a world first taking place right here at home – the world’s first successful penile transplant. The transplant was performed at Tygerberg Hospital in Belville three months ago, and was announced as a success on Friday.
The recipient of the transplant, a 21-year-old man who had his member amputated after a botched circumcision, can apparently enjoy a good romp with a full erection and a happy ending. So how did they perform this miracle? News24 reports:
The organ was harvested in a two-hour procedure from a donor who was declared brain dead. The whole penis was carefully dissected to keep blood vessels and nerves intact…
Professor André van der Merwe, head of the urology division at Stellenbosch who led the operation…practised on cadavers to see which nerves, blood vessels and other elements had to be joined to guarantee normal functioning.
On the back of the success there is a growing list of men awaiting a transplant. Doctors are ready to perform these operations but the only problem is a current lack of donors.
Men, if there is one thing we can rally around it’s helping another man out with his nether regions. Do your bit and become a donor for a boner.
