The older we get the more we become aware of the evils of the world…ISIS, global warming, carbs and cooldrinks crammed full of enough sugar to fuel a three-hour infant meltdown. So what does one do to avoid such poison? Why, we switch to diet or sugar-free substitutes and laugh smugly into our gluten-free sandwich at the silliness of others.
Well we have some bad news, as quoted here in CityPress:
Opting for a sugar-free drink isn’t much better, because some of the sugar substitutes in these drinks (such as aspartame) have been linked to causing cancer.
But let’s leave that argument for another day, because what we really want to see here is who sits atop the list of South African sugary beverages. Let’s take a squizz:
That’s right, you’ve heard all the nasty facts about a can of Coke but who would have thought Fanta Grape was making a play for top spot? Well, when you cram nine full teaspoons of sugar per serving you have earned your title.
In news that is slightly more predictable mineral water comes in squeaky-clean with zero sugar content. Lekker, now throw some vodka in mine with a wedge of lime and we’re looking at a viable alternative.
