How nice it is that we can now relax after our brave firefighters reigned in the blaze that engulfed the Cape peninsula. Spare a thought then for the folk of Jonkershoek in Stellies who are fighting their own out-of-control wildfire.
Caught up in the crosshairs of the blaze is the Stellenbosch University Sport Performance Institute, which has just been evacuated amidst fears of the fire spreading. Whilst no properties have been damaged (as yet) the fire is being fought on six different fronts, with 200 firefighters and helicopters doing their best to limit the damage.
Cape Nature spokesperson Justin Lawrence said authorities were trying to perform a ‘back burn’, where a smaller fire is lit with the aim of changing the line of the first.
You can see footage up top of the fire raging yesterday. Any Stellies students skipping class who want to send us their own footage can do so at chelsea@2oceansvibemedia.com
