It really doesn’t seem like all that long ago that the cries of ‘Bring Back The Signal’ and ‘Pay Back The Money’ were ringing through South Africa’s eardums. Jacob managed to take it all in his stride without much fuss; in fact some would say he thought the whole thing was an absolute hoot (HERE and HERE).
In amongst all the name-calling and political manoeuvrings we almost overlooked one vital thing – when would Zuma be required to answer the questions of the opposition parties? Well the time has come, but’s let not get too worked up. You see, today’s first six questions have already been submitted. The Daily Maverick tells us why this means no fireworks:
The questions are submitted, vetted and published in advance. Some are from ANC MPs, which means that they are far from strenuous, since no loyal cadre will want to show up Number One.
The president reads out a carefully worded, non-committal response which mostly reveals little, unless it’s an opportunity to wax lyrical about policy.
So the question you’re hoping is in there deals with the Nkandla saga no doubt. Well, although the first six questions don’t overtly deal with the fiasco, tensions are said to be mounting as opposition parties promise to push Zuma on questions that may make him squirm. This from IOL:
Opposition warned on Wednesday that proceedings would not get underway unless Zuma finishes outstanding questions from last August, when the EFF first disrupted the session in Parliament…
[They say] Zuma would not be allowed to jump questions and answer new ones before telling the nation when he is paying back a portion of the Nkandla funds.
Ding ding ding, let’s see how this one all pans out then.
