Just when you thought reality TV had reached its peak with the Kardashians, South Africa goes ahead and proves everyone wrong.
Vuyo Mvoko, a contributing editor for the SABC, was getting ready to do a live broadcast outside of the Milpark Hospital in Johannesburg. (Why the hospital? President Edgar Lungu of Zambia was checking in it seems.) Suddenly, right in front of the cameras, Vuyo is mugged.
Seriously, whilst the cameras are running (thank goodness they were not broadcasting), two guys come into view, have a look at what’s going on, and then mug Vuyo.
Spokesperson or the SABC, Kaizer Kganyago, reports:
The crew were not harmed although they are still in shock. They were robbed of personal belongings including cell phones and a laptop. The matter has since been reported to the police who were called to the scene.
Vuyo said the men had a gun and got away with a few mobile phones and explains what happened:
They were looking for phones and because I wasn’t giving him the phone, he then called the other one who had a gun and said ‘dubula le nja’ (shoot this dog). At that point, Sophie Mokoena just screamed ‘give him the phone’, so I gave it to him. I think they took about two or three phones.
It seems the muggers were oblivious to being filmed.
