First things first – what kind of 84-year-old worth almost $4 billion still gets up to go to work in the morning? Take a breather man, go enjoy yourself and take Sepp Blatter with you … is that too much to ask?
Well, Bernie Ecclestone, the chief executive of the Formula One Group and the man most commonly referred to as ‘the F1 Supremo’, isn’t calling it a day just yet. His drive to further line his coffers keeps him working, and over the years that drive has ruffled more than a few feathers. The Daily Mail reports:
If you want to make enemies in this world, then be rich and successful…
I know people who say they are my friends and forgot to ask me…They have got all sorts of reasons for saying they’re my friends. Friends are people who are prepared to give something up for you. Not the other way round.
So being rich and successful loses you mates? Must be why I have so many. Ecclestone also made mention of the bribery court case in Munich that took up a large part of his 2014, and even after losing refused to miss the chance to get a jibe in. The Daily Mail again:
It was said he faced 10 years in jail if convicted. The trial ended when Ecclestone paid $100m (£66m) to settle the case…
Ecclestone later sent Christmas cards, which featured a cartoon depicting him handing over a sack of money to a highwayman. ‘This is not a robbery,’ the man on horseback is saying. ‘I am collecting for the Bavarian state.
Making fun of the Germans, a game we can all enjoy. So when does Bernie intend to hang up his overpriced and underappreciated boots? Not any time soon, if the octogenarian is to be believed, which should give him plenty more time to make both enemies and vast amounts of money.
