There are many outlets through which our fair citizens can raise issues for discussion. We have social media, there is a slew of the ‘an open letter to’ going around and everyone under the sun has a blog these days. Take your pick and fire away, right?
Or, like these protesters at UCT, you could fling human excrement at a statue. The famed Cecil John Rhodes statue, found on the UCT campus just above the rugby field, was defiled yesterday by students protesting the mistreatment of black students at the university. This from News24:
One of the students, Chumani Maxwele, […] was protesting the “colonial dominance” still evident at UCT.
The students also want South African universities to disaffiliate themselves from Rhodes, who they said oppressed black people across the continent.
Vandalism of UCT property and violating health laws is illegal and an insult to our students and staff as well as to the wider community that participates in events on campus.
She added that the university has launched an investigation into the incident.
Any UCT students out there who saw what happened first-hand?
Is flinging excrement becoming the new go-to method of protest guaranteed to draw attention?
Do they pool their poo or must each individual protester make their own ammunition?
