Every time I see a World Rally Championship race on telly I find myself grappling with one question: who has less concern for their well-being, the drivers or the fans who line the hairpin bends and whoop with delight when each handbrake turn misses them by mere inches?
Well this video is free of any fan danger, although the two drivers in the vehicle went into a bit of a panic when their vehicle plunged off an embankment in Mexico and took a splash in a lake. This from the Telegraph:
Luckily both [Ott] Tanak and his co-driver Raigo Molder managed to swim to safety – although they were left with the dilemma of retrieving their car in order to continue the race.
You can see rescue efforts post-crash above in an operation dubbed ‘raising of the Ti-Tanak’. Whilst the vehicle was retrieved and managed to rejoin the race the next day Tanak (pictured above) and his buddy were forced to retire later with engine problems.
Spoiler alert, in the alternative ending to the above video Tanak and Molder are left to face sub-zero water temperatures with just a car door to cling to. Tanak eventually slips to the bottom of the lake after uttering the words ‘I’m so cold’. Molder was never the same again.
