Here’s a lovely story of success. You’ve heard of the KONGOS, right?
They’re a band of brothers. No, really. Johnny, Jesse, Daniel and Dylan Kongos make up the band, which they have named after their surname. Born in London and raised there and in South Africa, they hit our charts a few years back with ‘Come with me now’. The brothers then moved to Phoenix, Arizona, in 1996, to finish their schooling. Although away from SA for so long, they still consider themselves South African.
It took them a while to enter the American market, which is no easy feat, but they seem to have finally done it. ‘Come with me now’ has reached #1 on the Alternative Songs Billboard chart and #2 on Billboard’s Rock Chart back in 2011.
Billboard posted a bit of nice news last year March:
Kongos are racing up the charts with “Come With Me Now” — three years after its initial release. The accordion-tinged rock song reached a new peak on Billboard’s Alternative chart at No. 7 for the week ending March 9, in its seventh week on the tally. It’s the fastest-rising debut top 10 on the chart since Lorde’s “Royals” last July, and the fastest by a group since Flobots’ “Handlebars” in 2008.
They band played with One Republic at the 02 Arena in London last year, and have just got off touring with Kings Of Leon.
Gary Cool had a little catch up with them after their 02 gig. It’s a good mood maker.
