We’ve all woken up in the morning after a big night out and tried to piece our lives together. The Whatsapp messages are sent, all social media outlets get checked for incriminating photos and we do a perimeter search for all valuables. There’s always that one mate who sends a video of you babbling incoherently but don’t worry, they will get their comeuppance.
Now imagine waking up after a crash and forgetting your previous 20 years, which is exactly what happened to F1 ace Fernando Alonso. The 33-year-old Spaniard was involved in a high-speed accident on February 22 and when he woke, thought it was 1995. This from the Independent:
Asked who he was, what his job was, and what he hoped to do with his life, Alonso reportedly replied: “I’m Fernando, I drive go-karts and I want to be a Formula One driver.”
Alonso apparently could not remember making his F1 debut with Minardi in 2001, or either of his world championships in 2005 and 2006.
Thankfully Alonso has recovered and, although he will miss the season-opening Aussie GP on March 15, he should return to the racing circuit shortly.
It must take one hell of a knock to the head to lose memory of winning two world championships. I can still vividly recall the day I made a 50 in backyard cricket and I have been getting dropped on my head for years.
