Just when you thought it was safe to go outside…
The latest stats on road deaths in South Africa during February are in and it doesn’t make for pretty reading. Yes folks, if you break the numbers down we are looking at one death every hour on our roads, with News24 carrying the following breakdown from the Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC):
Over 650 people died on South Africa’s roads in February…the deaths were from 578 crashes recorded between 1 and 27 February.
Gauteng suffered the most fatalities with 136 road users losing their lives with the Western Cape coming in sixth with 49 deaths. The Northern Cape had the lowest number of deaths with just 20 deaths. Good work guys, but if it’s all the same to you I might just take the extra risk around these here parts.
What does the RTMC suggest road users do to ensure their safety? News24 again:
[They have] called on drivers to avoid driving drunk, while on drugs, recklessly, in unroadworthy vehicles, and while using cellphones.
Of course this begs the question lovers of a good time – why not just hop in an Uber and let someone else get you home safely. We’ll even hook you up with R150 off your first ride HERE.
We don’t want you to stop the party, we just want you to get to your front door in one piece. As for getting the key in the lock and sneaking in without waking your other half…you’re on your own there.
