Cyclists are usually quite a tight-knit group. They travel in packs, they descend on unsuspecting restaurants and coffee shops in a manner resembling locusts and, occasionally, they attack motorists like a pack of rabid wolves.
It is somewhat surprising then to hear that during a race in Boksburg last month some cyclist took to a spot of in-fighting. Worse yet, a certain Chris Jooste saw fit to drop the k-bomb towards fellow cyclist Luthando Kaka. This from TimesLive:
…cyclist Chris Jooste…verbally abused Kaka in a racist rant when he stood up for a fellow young black cyclist, Siyabonga Somchiza, who had been forced off the road by Jooste and Dusty Day.
Kaka allegedly told Day to stop taking advantage of the young man and that his behaviour was unacceptable. This angered Day, who later called Kaka a k*ffir.
Now this is where it all gets a bit confusing. Kaka, who is the country’s first black cyclist to race abroad as a professional and also the first to lead a cycling club, was suspended by Cycling SA along with Jooste and Day. Kaka’s lawyer has challenged that suspension in court and a disciplinary committee is due to deliver its findings shortly.
Guys, when you ride around at ungodly hours wearing overly toit spandex shorts looking like a prawn you really need to look out for each other. Let’s leave calling cyclists derogatory names to the rest of us road users, we find it highly comforting.
