Notorious Irish ‘celebrity’ chef’, Conrad Gallagher is back in town. This, after hightailing it out of here a few years back, following various liquidations, bankruptcies, sequestrations etc.
He has opened a new place in Gardens called ‘Cafe Chic’ (that name – surely satirical?). While Cape Town’s top-of-the-range D-list celebs and their freeloading friends attended the opening (here) in the last couple weeks, not everyone is pleased that he’s in town.
We received the following from a former Cape Town employee:
Hi,
I really don’t know where to start except to say I am gobsmacked and so are all my ex colleagues that used to work at Conrad Gallagher’s old restaurant (5 years ago) Geisha. Not only did he take UIF off all our salaries and then never made payment to UIF but he also skipped the country without paying staff for month’s as well as suppliers.
We are shocked that no one has come forward both suppliers and the government to ask for said money.
I know there was a UIF case against him and would like this man to be exposed for the fraud that he and his wife Candice are.
Please feel free to contact me, I also have other ex employees of his that are willing to come forward. This man goes around the world opening restaurants under his Michelin star status and yet has no money to pay staff or suppliers.
If you research him you will see that he was even under investigation for stealing art in Ireland.
He owes one of my friends R16,000 in wages and tips.
and a half years ago I personally went to UIF to claim and was told that my time at Geisha did not calculate towards muy UIF payment as they (Geisha) had never paid the UIF into UIF. They stated that there was an open case against him.
Thank you.
Another employee had this to say:
As Tracy has mentioned, Conrad fled 6 years ago and the chances of anyone having documentation is very unlikely.
I actually just came from the CCMA and they told me that the case I won can’t be re-opened due to the time elapsed.
Conrad has recently done a similar thing in LasVegas at his restaurant Posh Burger.
He needs to held accountable and prevented from doing it again.
We did not try to contact Conrad for comment, as this is not a report – we’re simply showing you what we’ve been sent.
We do however have some credible news outlets to quote from.

Wow – so many radical claims in a mainstream newspaper.
And these two articles above don’t even scratch the surface. A quick Google for ‘Conrad Gallagher fraud’ gives you these results.
Someone from Las Vegas posted this warning about Gallagher on Facebook.
Let’s watch this space.
