Here’s a story about how not to invest money… and why you should absolutely keep away from replying to those texts telling you you’ve just won R700 000.
Have you heard of the black dollar scam? No? Let’s explain.
Victims of the black dollar scam believed that they had the magic to turn black pieces of paper into US dollars.
It all started when Congolese investor David Kilato approached Nicodemus Solly Moeng, who at the time was the president of the French South African Chamber of Commerce and Industries, to give him R300 000. As a “security deposit”, Kilato gave him a few “small lock-up safes, stuffed with pieces of black paper cut to the size of the dollar”.
Goodness me. Black dollars? Are people actually losing their minds? I suppose it all comes down to greed.
Enter Captain Siyaza Patrick Siyale.
[Siyale was] investigating several black dollar scams and intercepted Moeng after Moeng had received two safes from a courier.
The captain then bribed Kilato for money in order for him to avoid arrest. Siyale is currently being heard in a Cape Town court – his trial will continue on March 13th.
What should we expect to hear next? If a Chamber of Commerce president can be this silly, there must be many stories being kept hidden away of magic and witchery. Let’s hope that there actually aren’t.
Sadly, this black dollar scam is seen a lot in African countries and is nothing new…
