I spotted an article in Town & Country magazine, detailing the advantages of private jet travel. With the costs of private air travel plummeting in South Africa, this is a very interesting space to watch. Click for the list.
According to Micaela English at Town & Country – here are eight clear advantages of private jet travel, compared to commercial (the horror):
1. Stronger. Faster. Higher.
Private jets are faster and fly higher than commercial planes, allowing passengers to arrive at their destinations much faster and with fewer bumps along the way as the aircraft can fly above typical weather and turbulence.
2. Lines.
What lines? At most private airports, passengers can drive onto the tarmac, right to your awaiting jet.
3. Cats & dogs.
Great news for your four-legged friend! Traveling is stress free for both pets and owners when you fly private.
4. You’re connected.
Passengers can stay connected with inflight Wi-Fi services at all points of the trip.
5. Lost luggage.
Your Tumi and T.Anthony is safe!
6. You don’t have to worry about that bottle of Veuve Clicquot getting through security!
You can get on board with the liquid of your choice.
7. Remote places.
Access to remote destinations such as Anguilla and the BVI’s that can be reached direct via private jet.
8. And finally… Space!
Who doesn’t want more space?
I must say, I tend to agree with everything she says. But she left out one thing. For business you simply cannot compare – not just with regards to the time saved, but more in terms of the work you can get done in the air. As a team.
And with with operators like Get Jet offering flights between Cape Town and Johannesburg for between R30,000 and R70,000* for the entire jet (eg. a Learjet 45 which takes 8 people), you’d be a fool not to check their prices before your next business trip.

* EMPTY LEGS AND 1-WAY CHARTER
Empty Legs
When a private jet takes a client from say Cape Town to Johannesburg, it still has to get back to Cape Town. So it flies back to Cape town empty. This is called an ‘empty leg.’ Because the dates of these empty legs are not flexible, they are made available to you at a fraction of the normal charter rate (up to 75% off).
1-Way Full Charter
Charter flights in South Africa have traditionally been charged at return rates, even if the charter client is only using one leg. But now, due to improvements in resources and logistics services, you are able to charter a Learjet 45 between Johannesburg and Cape Town, as a 1-way charter. So instead of paying, say R120,000, you will be paying R70,000 for the jet.
For corporates and busy people who value their time, you cannot beat the convenience of private air travel. Jets that take off according to your schedule and, with a Learjet 45, you’ll have room for you and up to seven associates / friends / family members.
