Fans of rapper Macklemore were in for a nasty surprise yesterday when #MacklemoreJoinedISIS became the top-trending topic on Twitter worldwide. So where exactly did this nugget of information come from then and is there any truth to the matter?

Well, first off let’s have a look at the tweet that raised the ire of Twitterati around the world.

Suppose it seems pretty legit coming from the account with the famed verified ‘blue tick’. However some digging revealed that the tweet was bogus, proving people don’t really think much before hitting retweet these days. In fact Macklemore is actually known as an advocate for the gay community, with this from The Daily Beast:

[He] has supported a number of progressive social causes, including marching in Ferguson protests in his native Seattle and having a bunch of gay couples be married (by Madonna, no less) during his Grammys performance of “Same Love”.

Rest easy Macklemore lovers the world over, he hasn’t joined the dark side. It does seem to have generated a lot of publicity for the rapper so it may be only be a matter of time before we see Madonna jumping on board.
