Tony Leon was the head of the DA from 1999 to 2007 and the head of the DP back in ’94 (you were probably somewhere in the middle of primary school, reading Nancy Drew or The Hardy Boys). He has been involved in South African politics since the 80’s and has seen the country rise out of Apartheid (which he fought against) and fall under the ANC government.
I’m sure he can only sit back and shake his head at the antics that are going on in our parliament now.
Tony makes some good points in his article in Business Day.
Malema is a disruptor: “he has chosen to participate in Parliament, yet appears to regard himself unbound by its rules, conventions and precedents”.
Zuma should have handled it differently. Upon taking the podium to speak after all the drama, Zuma should have offered South Africans some words of comfort.
He would have scored big had he even alluded to it and, as the man at the apex of our now damaged democracy, offered words of comfort, reassurance and repaired the breach.
And, my gosh, do we need to start being a bit more wary of the China take-off.
I can’t remember who said this, but someone did and it wasn’t me – last Thursday’s SONA was not about the state of the Nation, but rather about the state of the presidency.
Anyway, have a read HERE to see what else Tony has to say. He has been in the game for ages.
