There’s a lot to be said for heading down to the farmers market on a Saturday morning and getting all your foodstuff fresh from the earth. Zero additives, supporting the little man and a healthy dose of perving make it a pleasant morning out.
Now there’s another thing we can thank those good folk for…not putting sodium hydroxide in their product. Eh? Maybe you are more familiar with the name caustic soda, the stuff you pour down your drain when that shorn hair has clogged up the system.
Parmalat SA have recalled a batch of their Purejoy Apple Juice produced mid-December last year after traces of sodium hydroxide were found to be present. They were alerted to the problem after receiving comsumer complaints of nausea, stomach ache and a strange taste.
So where else other than drain cleaner might one find this chemical? This from health24:
Sodium hydroxide can be found in items like brick cleaners, cements and hair straighteners, among other products.
If you have ingested any of the above materials you should probably seek medical and mental assistance. If you have ingested a Purejoy Apple Juice produced on December 14 or 15 of last year you should probably see a health professional.
The contamination was apparently the result of a change of process, some technological difficulties and the dreaded human error. The countdown to complete robot takeover begins.
