The man in question, Eugene de Kock, has now been released from prison after 20 years served in what Justice Minister Michael Masutha called ‘the interest of nation-building’.
De Kock was responsible for the apartheid-era death squad which operated from Vlakplaas and was responsible for some truly heinous crimes. This from Times Live:
In 1996, De Kock was sentenced to two terms of life imprisonment for the murders of Japie Kereng Maponya and the so-called Nelspruit five: Oscar Mxolisi Ntshota, Glenack Masilo Mama, Lawrence Jacey Nyelende, Khona Gabela and Tisetso Leballo.
He was sentenced to a further 212 years’ imprisonment for conspiracy to commit murder, culpable homicide, kidnapping, assault, and fraud
At the same hearing Clive Derby-Lewis, the man responsible for the murder of Chris Hani, was denied parole despite the advice of the medical parole board.
