Turns out Ocean Basket should rather be calling itself “Fish Basket” or “Things-That-Swim-In-Water Basket”, because some clever lady out there in the depths of South Africa found out that one of the fish on their menu is not actually from the ocean and thus is not worthy of the word “ocean”.
Ms. Lisanne Brits complained to the Advertising Standards Authority of SA that one of the fish that comes on the “platter for two” is actually a Basa fish, which comes from the fresh waters of Vietnam, namely the Mekong Delta, which looks like this:
Anyway, she “argued that she had ordered a seafood platter and not a river basket, and therefore expected salt water fish only. She said the advertised platter was misleading”.
Ocean Basket contended that it had never “held itself” to be a seafood restaurant exclusively, and that it had been serving freshwater fish since 2006. It said the phrase “catch of the day” commonly referred to freshwater fish and seafood.
The ASA has given Ocean Basket until April 30th to amend every single menu in every restaurant. Fair enough. It is nice to know what you are actually eating.
