We knew it was bad, but this is next level stuff.
According to the Institute of Internal Auditors the cost of corruption to SA over the past years has ticked over to R700 billion. That’s, erm, too many zeroes.
Claudelle von Eck, the CEO of the auditors, attributed part of the problem to a culture of harassment towards whistleblowers. This from the Citizen:
Members are being intimidated when they try and raise the issue of corruption in an organisation
The startling figures came to light at the Anti-Intimidation and Ethical Practices Forum in Johannesburg.
I suppose we shouldn’t be all that surprised but figures such as these tend to get the blood boiling. After all, R700 billion is a whole lot of schools and housing, areas that need addressing long before we look at whether or not a president needs a fire pool in his house.
