The saying goes ‘better late than never’, and when it comes to Lance Armstrong being honest, it’s about bloody time.
Following a tell-all with Oprah Winfrey two years ago, when Lance spilled the beans on his years of doping during the Tour de France, he has opened up again to the BBC and dropped a couple of truth bombs.
The story getting the most airtime around the globe is the following admission, in his own words from the BBC:
If I was racing in 2015, no, I wouldn’t do it again because I don’t think you have to…
If you take me back to 1995, when doping was completely pervasive, I would probably do it again.
While I don’t doubt that he is right regarding the pervasiveness of the doping taking place during the mid 90’s, the admission still feels like something of a cop out. Armstrong also spoke about how he raced clean during his comeback to the tour in 2009 and 2010, as well as the immense strain the scandal has placed on his life.
I think it will take a pretty decent amount of time before those familiar with Armstrong’s brazen and aggressive doping denials during his reign as king of the Tour forgive him. There is something about a man barefaced lying to friends, family and fans around the world that leaves a very bitter taste in the mouth.
